WE ARE A WELCOMING CONGREGATION
.
ADULT EDUCATION & SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Love to read? Then Eastrose’s Bookgroup is for you! We meet for about 1 ½ hours on the third Thursday of each month – in September that falls on the 17th. September’s author is Robert Persig so we are reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Those more ambitious are also reading Pirsig’s other book, Lila, An Inquiry into Morals. It should be a lively discussion!

October's pick is the author Kazuo Ishiguro. The recommended book is Never Let Me Go." However, if you prefer to read another selection by this author, there are several suggestions: The Unconsoled, A Pale of Hills, An Artist of the Floating World.

We gather at Eastrose at 6:00 p.m. and go for about 1 ½ hours. It is a casual event and our goal is to have fun and share ideas and enjoy each others’ company. Bring a simple snack to share (e.g., some fruit, salad, cookies…). Hope to see you there! (For more information, contact Tom Ten Eyck at 503 720-0137 or teneyckt@dishmail.net.)

BROWN BAG LUNCH - September 3

Our monthly Brown Bag Lunches continue while Reverend David Maynard is out on sabbatical.  This lively group meets at noon in the Thatcher Room on first Thursdays.  Bring a brown bag lunch to Eastrose on August 6; and join with others for great conversation and company!

A COURSE IN MIRACLES

Join in the new "A Course in Miracles" (ACIM) Study Group.  It meets weekly, Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9 pm, and is open to Eastrose members, friends and all in the wider community.   The Course is an examination of spiritual truths with recommended thought-experiments aimed at gently undoing our ego thought system through the practice of forgiveness. The inevitable result is joy, and peace of mind.  ACIM integrates ideas from Christianity, Eastern religions, mysticism, psychology, and Platonism.  The study group meets every Monday night in the chapel from 7:30 to 9:00pm.  Drop-ins are welcome!  Contact Ed at drehs@comcast.net for more information.

WICCA 101

Class 1 of the new "Year and a Day" series from Lyceum of Trees begins on Sunday, September 27, at Eastrose Fellowship Unitarian Universalist at 1133 NE 181st between Glisan and Halsey at 3:00 pm and runs for three hours. This is in the Portland/Gresham area, and is open to Eastrose members and friends, and the community at large.  Classes continue to meet once a month for twelve months (usually) on the 4th Sunday of the month.

There is no pre-registration required but a show of hands is always welcome. The cost for the classes is minimal, usually around $5 per session, although that is subject to change depending on the number of people in the class and the amount of money the venue expects in compensation, and we do have ways of offsetting cash with volunteer and/or scholarship opportunities. The first two classes in the series are open to new members but will be closed at the third class and there will be no one admitted until the 2010-11 class series begins.

This is a basic paganism 101 series and is meant to give information to the blossoming pagan about paganism in general and is designed to help the newcomer find what fits. No one is required to join Lyceum of Trees nor are there any other membership requirements. If the series is not what you expected, you are welcome to drop and we never expect any more than what you can do. This series is NOT meant for the seasoned and well practiced pagan, although we do welcome such, as well.   Email Arrhiannon (arrhiannon@cs.com) or Gyelle (gyelle@comcast.net) for more information and/or directions.
