EXHIBITS

Timalyne Frazier, January & February 2008, collage, paintings, pen & ink, pottery

Timalyne's art utilizes a wide variety of styles and mediums. She grew up in a family of artists, and is a well traveled, forever student. She is continually inspired by diverse people and stories.  Timalyne has been a photographer since she was small. She often chooses a photograph, usually a portrait, and then the materials to use to create the collage portrait.  It is a puzzle for her to create.  She chooses materials that have limits so there is a challenge to surmount for every picture.  Her work has progressed from photography and collage into story and sculpture, and lately towards pottery.  She has been making whimsical sculptures and dishes.  She is constantly looking to expand which materials to use within the specific limits of each piece.  She is also a writer so her art often encompasses a story.  “My challenge is to bring the stories and pictures together to tell the stories when I’m not there to tell them myself.”  Timalyne Frazier

August, September, October 2007 Mary Walsh
Mary Walsh, 22, is the progeny of both Gresham and Eastrose.  She graduated from Gresham High School in 2003, and spent the next three years at Mt. Hood Community College, devouring virtually every 2-D art course they offer.  She now attends Portland State University, majoring in Fine Arts with a minor in English Literature.  She also works part-time in the Graduate School of Education doing office work.Mary is the daughter of Joyce and Steve Walsh, and began attending Eastrose at the age of 4.  She has been involved in all aspects of church life, and was especially active with the high school youth group.  Though not seen so often at Eastrose now, she still feels connected and values the friendships and guidance she has found here. Her mother reports that since she was a young child, Mary has quickly learned and mastered every creative outlet she attempted, including drawing, cartooning, painting, sculpture, printmaking, knitting, playing the saxophone, and writing. Her medium of choice is a tie between drawing materials like pencils, dipped calligraphy pens, and ink, and acrylic paints with their lure of a myriad of mixed-media opportunities.  All of the artwork being shown here was created for various college classes such as Painting, Printmaking, and Drawing. This is not to say that she doesn't make art outside of school, but college life being what it is, there isn't much extra time during the year for more personal projects.Mary takes inspiration from a great many things, but the more consistent influences seem to be music, particularly 80's pop, comic books/graphic novels, literature, Byzantine religious icons, Gustav Klimt, Edward Gorey, and good friends.

January, February and March 2007  Sandy Shaw, Eastrose members.   Since Sandy's father was a cartoonist, she grew up with art being an everyday event.  As an adult, she took art classes at the Chounard Institute in Los Angeles, but didn't really pursue art seriously until she retired.  Sandy enjoys all subjects; i.e., nudes, landscapes, friends; and presently, she's moving into her "Jazz period."  She says that her inspiration comes from observation, or an idea will just pop into her head.  When asked if she sells her works, or has sold any, she said that she just does this for fun and that her favorite paintings reside with friends and family.  But if someone were interested in buying a painting, “she'll talk!" Eastrosarian Thomas Kiefer is showing some of his paintings in the Eastrose lobby from October through December.  He presented his three day show Taken by Storm at the Mark Wooley Gallery of photographic prints transformed by the Katrina floods – You may visit his websites, www.thomaskeifer.com and www.takenbystorm.org to see more of his work. 10-11-12-2006 Photography
Eastrosarian Elena Hofmann-Smith has been painting watercolors for fifteen-plus years.  As a wife, mother of four, a poet and a naturopathic physician, she seeks to find and express a sense of calm and serenity.   She enjoys painting land and seascapes, still lifes, florals, and now is focusing on portraits.

Ron Randall on Display in January

The Eastrose Gallery is proud to announce Ron Randall’s illustrations will be exhibited sometime in January.  Ron is a graphic novel illustrator, and his current project is an adaptation of a Japanese folk tale called Amaterasu.  This traditional tale is set in ancient Japan, and the story centers around the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu.  The story goes that Amaterasu’s father creates her and two brothers simultaneously; then, he assigns each a role in the cosmic play.  The brother who is appointed to care for earth becomes jealous of the freedom his siblings enjoy in “heaven.”  In an argument, he scares Amaterasu; the terrified Sun Goddess hides in a cave causing hardship for the inhabitants of earth.

Ron utilizes contemporary pictures of Japan’s rural landscape to help him set the scene; and he researched tapestry illustrations to accurately depict the costume of the day.  Portraying mythical characters gives Ron some artistic latitude, as they exist in the imagination of artists and storytellers.

The Amaterasu is part of a series that Learner Books has commissioned; the series of graphic novels brings life to classic stories from around the world.  Comic books have long inspired many young readers, and the illustrations help them understand the meaning of unrecognized words.  This series will be distributed to schools and libraries.
