How America Got Mean & Why Kindness Matters

In the words of writer David Brooks, “In a culture devoid of moral education, generations are growing up in a morally inarticulate, self-referential world.” Along with Mr. Brooks, I wonder why so many Americans have gotten so sad and gutted.   And a companion question, why has a swath of America gotten so mean?

This intermeshed spiritual, emotional and crisis has spawned a society in which callous remarks to suffering are commonplace and are modeled by our leaders. How do we not squander our capacity for kindness, empathy and generosity in this face of widespread cruelty and compassion fatigue?

This sermon honors our first principle: affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person; and our shared value of equity and the right to flourish with love and compassion.
